I've not yet had the pleasure (??) of stitching a border around a design (but heaps of my future projects have them). My friend Anges says they require more concentration than normal stitching.
The problem is that if you put ONE stitch out of place the ends won't meet and that usually means heaps of unpicking. I've not yet thought of a way to fudge this one.
I plan to create my own borders using graph paper. After all, a border is just repeating a small simple pattern over and over. This is all just a plan at the moment but I'll let you know how I go with it (and the stitching) as soon as I can.
I'm very excited about creating my very own borders. When I finish one I'll put it straight in the free patterns section.
